How You Live – Point of Grace

Most weeks, there is a song that seems to match exactly how I’m feeling and describes my life even more perfectly than I could even attempt in words.  Last week though, it was Thursday before I realized what that song was, and I had been discouraged that it was taking so long to find a song I could identify with.  On this particular day though at work, I got a call from a patient’s family who I had gotten really close to in my work with at the hospital, and they told me that the patient had passed away.  During the call, the family also asked if I would be available and willing to play music for the service.  Within moments, I remembered singing this song with that patient and knew it was the one I was to sing for the funeral that weekend.

As I performed this song, I couldn’t help but be moved by the lyrics and think about the wonderful job I have as a music therapist.  I especially love the chorus:  “Turn up the music, turn it up loud. Take a few chances, let it all out. ‘Cause you won’t regret it, looking back from where you have been. ‘Cause it’s not who you knew, and it’s not what you did, it’s how you live.”  What an incredible thought – to live your life with no regrets.  To not spend your life looking back, wishing you would have made different choices, or lived life differently.  NOW is the time to begin.

I can’t help but just be grateful – I’m so blessed to be where I am, doing what I’m doing, surrounded by the people who love me the most.

How You Live – Point of Grace
Wake up to the sunlight with your windows open
Don’t hold in your anger or leave things unspoken
Wear your red dress, use your good dishes
Make a big mess and make lots of wishes
And have what you want
But want what you have
And don’t spend your life looking back.

Chorus:
Turn up the music, turn it up loud
Take a few chances, let it all out
‘Cause you won’t regret it
Looking back from where you have been
‘Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did, it’s how you live.

So, go to the ballgames and go to the ballet
And go see your folks more than just on the holidays
Kiss all your children, dance with your wife
Tell your husband you love him every night
Don’t run from the truth
‘Cause you can’t get away, oh no
Just face it and you’ll be okay.  Chorus

Oh, wherever you are and wherever you’ve been
Now is the time to begin.
So give to the needy and pray for the grieving
Even when you don’t think that you can
‘Cause all that you do is bound to come back to you
So, think of your fellow man
And make peace with God
And make peace with yourself, oh yeah
‘Cause in the end there’s nobody else. Chorus

‘Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did, it’s how you live.
